THE BRIEF

Designing the bar of the future.

Marriott International Design Development Asia Pacific commissioned Cocktail Professor and Studio Numen to develop a series of scalable, future-facing bar concepts for its luxury portfolio across the region.

Rather than creating one universal formula, the ambition was to explore distinctly different directions for the next generation of hotel bars . Concepts that could be adapted across brands, properties and locations while retaining a strong identity and elevated guest experience.

The challenge was both creative and practical: to rethink how guests interact with the bar, bring craftsmanship into the experience, move beyond conventional hotel bar design and create concepts that would remain relevant long after the initial development phase.

At the same time, every concept needed to be highly implementable. From spatial principles, bar stations and equipment to suppliers, recipes, pre-batching, mise-en-place and service rituals, the concepts were developed in detail to protect quality and consistency when implemented by different properties and teams.

The Social Club was one of three distinctly different concepts developed as part of this wider exploration.

THE CONCEPT

A social club reimagned.

The Social Club reinterprets the mystery and rituals of the traditional members club for a new generation . Replacing exclusivity with a more open, participatory sense of community.

Designed as a home away from home for like-minded guests, the concept revolves around connection, discovery and co-creation. Residential spaces create a sense of belonging, while hidden details, secret member experiences and unexpected rituals invite guests to explore and become part of the story.

Rather than simply sitting at the bar and ordering a drink, guests are encouraged to participate. They can step into the bartender’s world, stir their own cocktails, explore the Old Fashioned Library, experiment with different bitters, discover hidden home bars and unlock experiences as they engage more deeply with the concept.

The result is a bar designed not simply as a place to drink, but as a social experience built around participation, craftsmanship and human connection.

BAR DESIGN & GUEST EXPERIENCE

Designed for participation.

The Social Club was designed to change the traditional relationship between guest and bartender. Instead of placing the bar team behind a conventional barrier, the communal bar brings guests closer to the craft — creating opportunities to interact, participate and experience drinks being made from a different perspective.

Around this central bar, a series of distinctive experience elements give guests reasons to explore. Hidden Home Bars are integrated into residential spaces, creating unexpected moments where cocktails can be prepared — or guests can take part themselves. The Old Fashioned Library turns one of the world’s classic cocktails into a dedicated tasting and discovery experience, while the Cabinet of Curiosities introduces unusual objects, hidden stories and rituals throughout the space.

These elements are brought together through a residential interior language: intimate lighting, comfortable seating, tactile materials, hidden details and spaces designed to encourage conversation and connection.

The result is a bar environment where design, craftsmanship and guest participation become part of the same experience.

BEVERAGE PROGRAM

Classics, reframed.

The beverage program translated The Social Club concept into the glass. Rather than building the menu around trends, we took familiar drinking rituals and classics as a starting point, then reframed them through contemporary techniques, storytelling and guest participation.

At the heart of the program is the Old Fashioned Library, a collection of more than 20 interpretations of the classic cocktail. Different spirits, infusions, fat-washing and other techniques create a broad spectrum of expressions, while the experience invites guests to taste, compare and discover the drink in greater depth.

Alongside the library, the program includes five signature cocktails and five secret cocktails for members, extending the sense of discovery and exclusivity built into The Social Club concept.

Crucially, the drinks were developed as part of the wider bar experience. Open workstations bring craftsmanship into view, while pre-batching, mise-en-place and carefully planned bar logistics support speed and consistency without removing the interaction between bartender and guest.

DESIGNED TO SCALE

From concept to a repeatable system.

For Marriott, a strong concept alone was not enough. The Social Club needed to retain its identity and quality when implemented across different properties, locations and operational teams.

We therefore developed the concept as a detailed system. Bar stations, equipment, bottle placement, ice, storage, mise-en-place and service workflows were considered alongside the design. Beverage recipes and preparations were structured around consistency and efficient execution, using pre-batching and advanced preparation where appropriate.

The operating model was designed to reduce dependence on individual bartender experience while protecting the quality of the drinks and leaving the team more time for craftsmanship, storytelling and interaction with guests.
The wider implementation framework extended into equipment, OS&E, opening and stock requirements, recipe manuals and training guidelines — giving future properties a detailed foundation for translating The Social Club from concept into operation.
